The Princess who defied Royalty

Long before Madeleine Albright or Condoleeza Rice became pioneering women politicians in world politics, the free world dealt with strong Moro women who held decision-making posts in their societies. Sittie Kabira was crowned Sultan in Sulu in the 17th century, her territory having entered treaties with colonizing spice-hunters. Rajah Potri , wife of Rajah Buayan’s Datu Utto, was believed to have been de facto Sultan of Maguindanao between 1888 and 1901, when there was a dispute between Spain and Maguindanao.

Lanao Election Forecast, Dirty as Usual

Lanao Sur and Marawi elections are the most controversial, the frauds committed having been exposed before Senate and Congressional hearings. No election officer has yet been jailed. Those names stated in the GARCI tapes are still in their electoral posts. No reforms yet being done. Prospective congressional, gubernatiorial, and mayoralty candidates next year have still to mobilize millions of pesos for buying votes.

Women in Veil Behind Bars: What Can We Do?

In 2005, we visited Camp Karingal to verify report of more than 100 Muslim women under detention for various crimes. The report was confirmed. More than 90% of the Sisters are facing charges under R.A. NO. 9165 otherwise known as “The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. The rest of the Sisters are charged with cases involving Estafa, homicide and other minor offenses. I saw the need of some intervention to remedy the sufferings of the Sisters inside the detention center

TUGAYA : Trading Traditional Arts

HOME OF the Sultanates, sarimanok, and Islam: Visiting Lanao del Sur province of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) is like going back to centuries ago when women walked around gracefully in their malongs (wrap-around clothing) and men who had betel-stained golden teeth played chess all day. But although being transported to a place that seems stuck in time could be soothing to a frazzled urbanite, the truth is Lanao del Sur is that way largely because it is one of the poorest provinces in the country, while ARMM is the poorest region in the Philippines in all indicators of human development.
