The Islamic City of Marawi is a 1st class city in the province of Lanao del Sur, Philippines. It is the capital city of Lanao del Sur. Marawi City is bounded on the west by Marantao and Saguiaran, on the east by Bubong and Ditsaan Ramain, on the north by Kapai and Saguiran, and on the south by Lake Lanao. It has a total land area of 22.6 sq. km.

According to the 2000 census, Marawi City has a population of 131,090 people in 20,375 households. It is politically subdivided into 96 barangays. The economy of Marawi City is largely based on agriculture and exporting.

Land Area & Location

The city of Marawi is located on the northern shore of Lake Lanao. As the capital city, it serves as the commercial, educational, cultural, religious and political center of the province of Lanao del Sur. The total land area of Marawi City is about 22.6 square kilometers. It occupies 0.01 percent of the Philippines' entire area of 300,000 square kilometers, and represents 0.15 percent of Central Mindanao's total area of 14,571.3 square kilometers.

Political Subdivision

Marawi City is one of the three cities in Central Mindanao. It is also called The Islamic City of Marawi and the summer capital of the region. It is composed of 96 barangays which are divided into five political barangay districts: District I-29 barangays; District II-22 barangays; District III-17 barangays; District IV-17 barangays; and, District V-11 barangays.
