Muslim Lawyers Challenged to Serve

More than 30 Muslims passed the 2007 bar examinations with one making history  in entering the top ten . Al-shwaid L.  Ismael  from a provincial law school, University of Cebu landed in the eighth , garnering a rating of 85.65 %.

No list of Muslim topnotchers is readily available but only a few have attained the distinction, among them Prof. Gafar Lutian of Jolo who placed 7th in the 1991 Bar examinations. One of the successful bar candidates, Mrs. Arifa Alauya-Ala is the 5th lawyer, among the Alauya brood  of Lanao del Sur. Her father, former Jurisconsult Saadudin Alauya, was founding member of the Commission that drafted the Code of Muslim Personal Laws (CMPL) of 1971.

Rather than engage in election lawyering as is the usual case, the new “Moro ” lawyers were challenged to address the issues of “injustice” against Muslims in the Philippines. A Manila-based civic group, the Young Moro Professionals Network (YMPN) Chairperson Baibonn Sangid said, “  We hope your profession will help uplift the condition of the Moro ummah particularly those innocently and unjustly incarcerated behind bars in different jails nationwide on the pretext of  preventing terrorism.  Let us help ease the pain of our brothers and sisters who are languishing  in jails.”

Lawyer Raissa Jajurie of SALIGAN invited the new lawyers to join alternative lawyering through the Bangsamoro Lawyer’s Network (BLN) which seeks to serve the marginalized sectors of society.

In 2005, the Commission on Human Rights and the Women Lawyer’s Circle (WILOCI) documented the cases of Muslim women and children detained in Metro Manila jails. The study showed a high incidence of human rights violations. YMPN estimates there are about 600 women detained in Metro Manila, many without legal aid and mostly facing criminal charges under RA 9165 known as “The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

A 2003 UN report says some women have become drug users or pushers as one of the effects of poverty and unemployment.

The Bangsamoro areas, one of the poorest regions in the country, are also in need of professionals like lawyers. Senior Research Associate Dr. Astrid Tuminez of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) said lawyers, educators, entrepreneurs are needed by Moros.

The list of successful Muslim examinees culled by YMPN are the following:

Dont pity your self!
Big deal! It does not matter if we Muslims do not get to the top 10. It will only matter when these new Muslim lawyers will use this amanah to defend our innocent Muslim brothers and sisters languishing in jail simply because they are Muslims... I challenge all our Muslim lawyers to prove themselves as defenders of the weak and poor muslims who cannot afford to pay a legal counsel... forget about not getting the top 10... You will be number 1 in the eyes of Allah if you help these people... dito masusubukan ang galing ninyo!

The highest place that a Muslim attained in the history of bar exams is Second Place by Atty. Kamar M. Boloto, University of the East, in 1970 with an average grade of 86.75.

HONESTY
Direct from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, we wish to extend our warmest congratulations to our new muslim lawyers in the Phlippines. Gentlemen, this only means that your achievements are just the beginning of a much more complicated task in bringing up the real cause of being so behind-(with in the philippine society). Poverty, racial discrimation, educational in- equality, political mis- reprentation in the national level, etc. are some of the most ,if not , very urgent for our young professionals to immediately intiate any acceptable means in addressing a such.

Again, We are very , very proud of you ! ALLAH IS THE GEATEST and Insa-Allah , the Bangsa Moro People will eventaully realize their ultimate Goal !
